The Residency process:
Building a definitive body of work
Each Signature Study is a tailored, multi-day residency designed to transform raw field work into a polished, exhibition-ready collection.
01. Pre-residency curation
Before your arrival in Amsterdam, we meet for an in-depth creative consultation to review your existing portfolio, establish project goals, and map out your multi-day field trajectory.
02. Field immersion & production
We move onto the street for intensive, multi-session field work. Moving beyond isolated snapshots, we focus on long-form visual narrative, light geometry, and developing a calm, steady rhythm on the street.
04. Portfolio assembly & certification
We conclude with final sequencing and curation, arranging your strongest work into a cohesive, publication-ready collection. Enrollees receive an official Certificate of Completion (Certificaat van Deelname) documenting their advanced instructional hours and demonstrated portfolio competence under recognized standards.
03. The mid-way edit
A dedicated studio review where we step out of the field to inspect test prints or initial sketches. We isolate emerging visual themes, resolve technical roadblocks, and sharpen our focus for the final field sessions
Track 01 - Film & rangefinder
Storytelling in 36 frames. A study in composition, restraint, and analog discipline.
This residency is engineered for photographers seeking to move past accidental snapshots toward a deliberate, complete visual story. Working with a manual camera, we approach the city as a permanent stage—focusing entirely on pacing, environmental geometry, and narrative depth.
The Discipline: Learn to create within the physical constraints of a single roll of film. We master subtle spatial transitions, natural architectural frames, and the hidden details that elevate loose photographs into a cohesive documentary essay.
The Flow: Over two intensive days, we map out a clear direction for your project. We navigate diverse neighborhood pockets, maintaining a confident personal style through shifting light and moving crowds.

Track 02 - Amsterdam field journal
A visual record in ink and pigment. A study in perspective, light, and selective focus
This residency is engineered for creators using ink and watercolor to capture the rich architectural character of the city. We dive into reading Amsterdam's 750-year-old streets—learning to strip away modern visual distractions to isolate the true atmosphere and structure of a scene.
The Discipline: Master the art of strategic omission. We focus on identifying the core architectural lines of historic Dutch facades while ignoring urban clutter, mastering complex perspective directly in the open air where speed and confidence align.
The Execution: We treat your sketchbook as a lasting, professional archive of your practice. Using a provided 12-color Schmincke Horadam watercolor palette and archival papers, you build a deeply personal collection of drawings that celebrate the light and geometry of historic Amsterdam.

Track 03 - Seeing in silver
A deep study in the structure of light. An immersion in contrast, texture, and shadow.
This residency is a dedicated exploration of the black-and-white frame. Built around the legendary, color-filter-less sensor of the Leica M11 Monochrom and manual M-series glass, this track removes color entirely to force a master-level study of light, luminance, and spatial geometry.
The Sensor & The Discipline: By stripping away the Bayer color array, the M11 Monochrom captures the original photons with incredible dynamic range. You will learn to read subtle variations in tone in real time—using Amsterdam's low-angle maritime light to define shape, scale, and three-dimensional depth.
Commanding Shadow & Light: We practice navigating high-contrast environments, learning how to hold delicate highlights while drawing rich, luminous detail out of deep canal shadows. For those transitioning to manual rangefinder operation, we adapt the field pace so focusing and metering become pure second nature.

Marc V’s Case Study: Draw less, say more
Baseline: Lost in the details
(over-rendering of non-essential detail)
Outcome: Cleaner, focus on form
(practicing essentialism)
“Jacob’s suggestions pushed me to change how I see the canal. I tend to get focused onto the details and try and draw all the bricks and either give up or end up with a detailed page that feels flat. Now, I am starting to see a few big shapes and tell stories, though I still catch myself wanting to add too much detail.”

Signature Study FAQ
Your questions, answered.
Q: How are the Signature Studies distinguished from the Masterclass?
While the 6-hour Masterclass focuses on constructing a single visual essay, The Signature Study is an immersive, multi-day private residency designed for complete portfolio development. The extended timeframe allows us to dive deep into a single medium or track, working side-by-side to curate, edit, and sequence a complete, publication-ready body of work.
Q: Do I need to provide my own equipment?
You are encouraged to bring your primary tools so your breakthroughs translate directly to your daily practice. However, to eliminate logistical friction, full access to world-class equipment is completely included:
Photography Tracks (Film & Seeing in Silver): Full access to manual Leica M-System bodies (Leica MP and Leica M11 Monochrom) and legendary M-series lenses is provided.
Sketching Track (The Amsterdam Field Journal): You will receive a gifted, yours-to-keep studio kit featuring professional Rosemary & Co sable brushes, a curated 12-color palette of Schmincke Horadam watercolor pigments, and archival Hahnemühle papers.
Q: What does "Bespoke" mean? How does the custom curriculum work?
Every residency is built from scratch around your specific creative targets. Before you arrive in Amsterdam, we hold a private consultation to map out a tailored project roadmap. Our time together flows seamlessly from this strategy into multiple days of intensive field work, concluding with a comprehensive portfolio review and evaluation under recognized vocational standards.
Q: What is the physical output of the residency?
You leave Amsterdam with a polished, exhibition-ready portfolio—not casual travel snapshots. Depending on your track, you depart with a curated gallery of master-grade digital files, a physical journal of fine watercolor studies, or high-resolution analog negative scans.
Q: Are these residencies suitable for those new to the Leica system?
Absolutely. The multi-day format provides dedicated time to master a manual rangefinder system with total confidence. We break down manual concepts—such as zone focusing, hyperfocal distance, and reading high-contrast light meters—into clear, practical habits that quickly become second nature on the cobblestones. That said, for those who prefer autofocus or an EVF while retaining rangefinder-style framing, a world-class hybrid system (Fujifilm X-Pro3) is available for use.
Q: What is included in the €1250 base tuition?
The Signature Study is an all-inclusive private residency. Tuition covers your pre-residency creative consultation, personalized route mapping, two full days of private 1:1 field mentorship, specialized loaner gear (Leica bodies/lenses, film stock, or premium watercolor materials), and your final portfolio evaluation. We conclude the experience over coffee or wine (or tea, though local options leave much to be desired) and award your official Certificate of Completion (Certificaat van Deelname).
