02. The Field Study
A 6-hour tailored-to-you session
The Masterclass: A Six-Hour Deep Dive
01. Setting the Stage
We begin by exploring the architectural patterns of the Jordaan or historic city center. The morning focuses on training your eye—spotting natural frames, balancing light and shadow, and establishing the initial anchor frames of your visual essay before the city's afternoon rhythm picks up.
02. The Mid-Day Review
Mid-way through the session, we step out of the field for a working lunch and portfolio critique. We examine your morning captures together over coffee, pinpoint your strongest visual threads, and refine our afternoon itinerary based on what is performing best.
03. Completing the Narrative
The afternoon is dedicated to capturing the remaining elements of your visual story—focusing on fluid sequencing, human gesture, and architectural detail. We conclude with a final editing session, paring your output down into a definitive 9-frame collection.
Vocational Recognition & Certification:
To meet recognized European vocational standards, your study concludes with an evaluation of practical field tradecraft—compositional framing, narrative sequence, and manual tool control. Enrollees receive an official Certificate of Completion (Certificaat van Deelname) documenting their instructional hours and technical achievements.
The Field Study: Craft a visual essay
This field study is designed to transform your pace—replacing reactive snapshots with a deliberate, cohesive body of work.
A 6-Hour Field Study
Often, making art on scene is treated as a reactive rush that results in pieces that lack connection. This 6-hour intensive teaches you to treat the city as a permanent stage—moving beyond lucky snapshots to build a connected, 9-frame visual narrative.
EXAMPLE: Multi-frame structure using a 9-image framework
We deconstruct the visual essay into an intentional, practical sequencing framework. Learn to identify and capture the essential elements required to build a complete, compelling story:
01. The Anchor: Establishing the architectural and geometric foundation of the space.
02. The Relationship: Documenting the interaction between people and their urban surroundings.
03. The Gesture: Isolating fleeting human movement, subtle posture, and spontaneous human expression.
04. The Detail: Focusing on texture, the interplay of light and shadows, and overlooked urban elements.
05. The Pattern: Uncovering repeating geometry, line weight, and natural environmental rhythms.
06. The Portrait: A clean, intentional study of character within its natural street environment.
07. The Transition: Images that bridge distinct spaces and guide narrative flow.
08. The Juxtaposition: Highlighting striking contrasts between historic architecture and modern life.
09. The Resolution: A thoughtful closing image that brings your visual story to a definitive finish.
Mastery of Ink & Light
Whether you operate a rangefinder lens or a fountain pen, the objective remains identical: transforming a fleeting street scene into a deliberate, permanent narrative.

A Narrative Evolution
Initial Reactive Frame
Final Constructed Narrative
“I still feel overwhelmed by how busy Amsterdam is, but Jacob taught me to see the city as a series of pre-built stages and scenes, like a movie set. By establishing my 'anchor' first, everything was easier. I’m working on being an active narrator.”

Your Questions, Answered.
Q: How does the Field Study differ from the Field Clinic?
While our 2.5-hour Field Clinic focuses on resetting your basic mechanics and composing a single frame, the 6-Hour Field Study is an immersive deep dive into storytelling. We navigate multiple neighborhoods to train you in visual sequence, helping you construct things like cohesive 9-frame visual essay across the city.
Q: Do I need to provide my own equipment for the Field Study?
You are encouraged to bring your primary camera or sketchbook so your breakthroughs translate directly to your daily practice. However, for those on the Urban Sketching or Combined Study tracks, we provide full access to a premium field kit—including Rosemary & Co sable brushes, Schmincke Horadam watercolor pigments, and archival Hahnemühle papers—so you can experience world-class materials with zero friction.
Q: What is included in the "Creative Roadmap"?
Prepared through a quick consultation before we meet on the street, your Creative Roadmap maps out our 6-hour route across subject-rich Amsterdam neighborhoods. It accounts for shifting daylight, architectural geometry, and crowd flow to ensure every minute in the field delivers targeted, practical progress.
Q: Can I pursue both sketching and photography in one session?
Yes. The Combined Study (Photo + Sketch) is exclusive to the 6-hour Masterclass format. We explore a fluid workflow where you use the camera as a fast tool to capture street geometry, and the sketchbook to build rich, atmospheric layers of ink and watercolor.
Q: What advanced technical skills are covered?
We move well beyond basic manual settings to give you total command over your craft. Depending on your goals, we cover advanced manual metering for high-contrast shadows, deliberate shutter drag for motion blur, and spatial layering to evoke mood and depth.
Q:What do you mean by “moving past ‘reactive photography’”?
Frantically chasing fleeting moments leads to crowded memory cards full of accidental snapshots. We teach you to see the street as a stage—setting up composition, light, and geometry first—so you can anticipate human motion with absolute certainty rather than relying on luck.
Q: How does "The Review” function?
We wrap up over coffee (or tea, though Dutch tea culture leaves a lot to be desired) to evaluate your day's output against your initial goals, isolating your strongest frames into a connected collection. Enrollees completing the study receive an official Certificate of Completion (Certificaat van Deelname) documenting their completed training hours under recognized CRKBO vocational standards.
Q: I am quite experienced; can we skip the basics?
Absolutely. Every masterclass is a private 1:1 mentorship, so there is no fixed, generic syllabus. We can bypass mechanics entirely and tailor the depth, pace, and editing critique directly to your standing as a dedicated artist or professional.
