Frequently and Infrequently Asked Questions
Your Questions,
Answered
I. Enrollment & Diagnostic Phase
01 | Why is a 50% deposit required and how is it utilized?
Your deposit secures your position in the intake queue. It initiates the Diagnostic Phase, covering the professional assessment of your technical baseline and the preparation of your field materials prior to our session. Because this phase involves dedicated instructional design before we meet, deposits are non-refundable.
02 | What is the policy for inclement weather?
As a documentary-focused institution, we work in all atmospheric conditions. High-contrast or "adverse" weather is utilized as a structural narrative element. Sessions are only rescheduled in the event of extreme weather warnings (KNMI Code Red/Orange) that pose a physical risk to professional equipment.
II. The Vocational Framework
03 | Is this a photography or sketching tour?
No. Amsterdam Creatief is a Short Course Vocational Training provider. We do not provide recreational tours; we provide M.Ed.-led technical instruction designed to achieve specific professional benchmarks and narrative autonomy. We utilize the city as a laboratory, not a destination.
04 | Will I receive a professional qualification?
Upon completion of any study tier and the subsequent Summative Evaluation, practitioners receive an Amsterdam Creatief Certificate of Completion. This documents the specific technical competencies and narrative outcomes achieved during your study, qualifying it as professional development.
III. Instrumentation & Mediums
05 | I don’t use the Leica M-System or own a professional camera; can I still enroll?
Absolutely. The pedagogical frameworks—such as Structural Observation and Narrative Design—are platform-agnostic. They apply to any instrument, whether digital, analog, or pigment-based. It is only some of the Signature Studies that require such cameras, and those are provided for use.
06 | Do I need to provide my own primary materials?
For the Field Clinic, practitioners must provide their own primary gear to ensure technical breakthroughs are immediately transferable to their daily workflow. For Masterclass hybrid or urban sketching courses, a professional grade set of tools, brushes, and pallets of pigment are provided. For Signature Studies, a Leica M-System instrument and a professional-grade watercolor suite (Schmincke Horadam)are provided as part of the residency immersion.
IV. Professional & Ethical Standards
07 | What is the ‘No-Staging’ rule?
In alignment with documentary ethics, we do not manufacture experiences or stage scenes. Our methodology focuses on systematically decoding the authentic environment. We record the world as it is experienced, not as it is directed. This ensures the integrity of your professional portfolio and the "Grit" of your work.
08 | Can I bring a 'non-participating' guest?
One participating study partner is included in the tuition for the Field Clinic and Masterclass tiers. To maintain the density of the 1:1 instructional environment and the integrity of the Technical Brief, non-participating guests are generally not permitted.
Exceptions for Minors: An exception is made for practitioners accompanied by minors up to a maximum group size of 4 (mentor + student + 2 minors). In such cases, the client acknowledges that the presence of a non-participants may impact the cadence and depth of instruction. The client assumes full responsibility and liability for the minor during the study. This is a focused vocational engagement; we prioritize the professional development of the primary practitioner.
V. Methodology & Evaluative Outcomes
09 | How does the study or session end?
The study culminates in a formal Synthesis of Findings. Depending on your track, you will receive a curated digital archive or a physical body of archival sketches. This serves as the Permanent Record of your achieved technical benchmarks and visual signature.
10 | Do you provide post-residency critique?
Every session includes a Formative Audit to establish a repeatable system for self-critique. For practitioners requiring sustained development, post-residency Archive Diagnostics or mentorship extensions can be architected into your long-term curriculum.
VI. Administrative & Educational Policy
11 | Is there a prerequisite for the Signature Series?
While there is no mandatory prerequisite, a Technical Baseline Assessment is required during intake. We strongly recommend the 01 Field Clinic for practitioners who have not yet established a systematic manual workflow, as the Signature Series is a high-load residency focused on deep narrative synthesis.
12 | Can these sessions be conducted in languages other than English?
All vocational instruction, curriculum design, and audits are conducted in English. To ensure the precision of the Technical Brief and the accuracy of the instructional record, practitioners should have professional-level proficiency in the language of instruction.
13 | Are the fees inclusive of VAT (BTW)?
As a registered provider of vocational education (CRKBO), our fees are VAT-exempt (vrijgesteld van BTW). Invoices are issued in accordance with Dutch educational tax standards for professional bookkeeping and tax-deduction purposes.
VII. Locations & Accessibility
14 | Do you provide transportation between study sites?
No. Amsterdam is our classroom; the transition between sites is a critical component of Slow Observation. Most studies are conducted on foot to facilitate "Deep Looking," utilizing the city’s water and rail infrastructure only when the Technical Brief requires a shift in perspective.
15 | How is 'Street Photography' and privacy handled?
We operate strictly within Dutch privacy laws and the ethical frameworks of documentary photography. Our training includes the Ethical Navigation of Public Space, ensuring a professional and minimally invasive presence while prioritizing the decoding of the architectural environment.
